Isn’t the whole idea behind growing a beard is so you don’t have to shave? In short answer yes, but no. In order to get your beard to grow out better and in good shape, trimming is required. This helps cut down on fly aways and dead ends.
I have never done work to a beard before, I don’t want to butcher my beard and start over! If you are uncertain about your ability to trim and maintain your own beard, you can always head to your local barber shop and have them take care of it for you. If you are serious about growing, your barber will set you up on some kind of a trim schedule that best fits you. The best part is a lot of barbers will usually talk their way through the process so after a few trims, you can start to feel more confident in your ability to trim your own beard.
I have been growing my beard for awhile and I am ready to start trimming on my own, what tools do I need? Good question here. A good beard trimmer to start. It’s a little costly upfront but you will save in the long run versus the guy that goes and spends $20 a month for the same service. Next a good set of scissors and a comb. This is where the fine tuning comes in. Getting rid of those stubborn fly aways and really setting the shape of your beard. Lastly a good beard brush and your favorite products from Furry Hippie Beard Company.
So, let’s get down to it. Depending on your beard style will determine how often you need to check and trim. Make sure you set yourself a schedule and do this regularly. I usually check mine after I shower and make my adjustments there as needed. When you are ready to trim, carry out the following steps:
Now, I want to back up and discuss the neckline and cheeks. Many people wonder how far down the neck you should go. This depends on your size, style, and shape of your beard. Many beard experts say to shave where the chin meets the neck. The vertical part of your neck should be clean shaven while the underside to be covered. Some choose to imagine an imaginary line that goes from one ear, down your sideburns and under your chin, across the underside of your chin and back up to the other side. The main focus here is to create a pleasing shape and avoid setting the neckline too high or low. As for the cheeks, you can generally just let it grow naturally and trim as needed. It is best to shave the top part of your cheeks in curve with your face and up your sideburns.
I hope that you have a good idea on how to trim your beard and make it look neat and clean. By all means, please listen to your local barber as they will tell you from a professional’s perspective on what you need to do with your beard.
]]>We did not stop at the markets though. We found local stylists in the North Alabama area that were excited to share Furry Hippie with their customers and it was an instant success. Our first stylist, Cindy’s Wicked Razor Shave & Clip Joint, sold out within a month. Her customers kept returning for more. and we obliged. We picked up a second retailer, Southern General Provisions for Men, and then later, Whiskers, a Men’s hair care shop and barber.
With more products being released in the future, such as beard balm and moustache wax, we hope our fan market will continue to grow as well as the anticipation we have of seeing well groomed faces everywhere. We hope that you enjoy our products just as much as us! As these blogs progress, we will feature testimonies from current fans, as well as tips, tricks, and general stories that you all can connect with and feel right at home with the Furry Hippie Beard Company.

It all started in December 2019 with a sublime, but tangible idea. I have a beard and, well, I'm not alone. I realized I was relying on chemically-infused beard care products and let's face it, it's not natural. Like many other bearded friends, I was looking to change my beard care routine with products I could trust. So, the development of our first beard oil, Old Man’s Money, went from a plan to a physical reality. The scent is rich with hints of scotch whiskey and vanilla mixed with a cocktail of natural oils found on this beautiful Earth. And just like that, we had our first hit. But don't just listen to me, check out our reviews.
Ready to hit the shelves, our first official month of sales was February 2020. Instantly, we knew that this company was about to take off. After we developed Old Man’s Money, we had a baseline for all our oils to come. By June 2020, different scents were being sold on our site. A new product to enhance our beard-care product line was put into development around July-August 2020. This is when we introduced beard butter to our consumers. At this point, we were expanding and sharing our brand locally. We attended local markets and engaged with great beards that were curious and excited about our products.
Our oils are mixed with Jojoba, Argan, Sweet Almond, and Pumpkin Seed oils that fully hydrate and condition the skin underneath your facial hair and help your mane grow to its full potential. This is one of the most crucial products any serious bearded man can invest in. I say invest because a good bottle of beard oil will set the mood for your beard. Your beard should be saying: Look at Me!! Now, there are many scents to choose from that are great to showcase your personality. Our company offers six different scents starting with Old Man's Money, Groovy Grove, Wicked Grind, Twigs & Berries, Hippie Mojo and Natural (unscented version for sensitive skins or for product pairing options.) Check out our products page for more details.
Our beard butters are mixed with the same scent profiles above and are made with all-natural ingredients from our wonderful planet. Why? 1. Because it is natural and 2. Because it is Groovy! The goal was not only to assist in shaping your beard but to find ways to also hydrate and condition your beard naturally. This is where the ultimate bearded products ideas came to prosper. Our products have the following ingredients; Shea butter, Mango, Hemp Seed, Illipe Nut butter, and even beeswax that we source from a local hive. We genuinely wanted a product that held up to the Furry Hippie name.
We get a lot of fans that really enjoy our logo and our colors. We do too! We took the bright tie-dye colors from the sixties and transformed Mr. Hippie. We like to pop-out, so what better way than using a simple black background to let the brightness of our logo catch your eye every time you open your cabinet. This should remind you how cool and hippie you are. We placed our logo on numerous swag items too. Check the site for shirts, hoodies, mugs, socks, and even a Mr. Hippie neck gaiter suitable for all the elements.
We all have our signature look. Clean shaven, a good shadow on a structured jawline, a moustache, or a well-groomed and maintained beard. How do I know what is well-groomed and maintained? Well, if you are wanting to know what the best length and shape of your mane is, I hope I can answer your questions. We will cover the art of shaving later.
As mentioned at the beginning, a beard portrays so many things in our minds but why should you grow a beard in the first place? Well for starters, it’s the ultimate symbol for masculinity and power. You are a man, so show it! Beards are great at hiding odd shaped and dull jawlines all while making you look older, more distinguished, and in many cases, more attractive. A beard can also help keep your face warm and guard against wind and helps keep dust and germs from entering your nose and mouth. You may or may not like having a beard on your face and that is perfectly okay but growing a beard requires patience as it does not grow overnight. The best way to see if you will like having a beard is to not shave for six weeks. By this time, you should have grown enough hair past the stubble phase to determine if you will be liking your beard or reaching for a razor. One thing to be aware of is your facial hair is not the same as the hair on your head and can grow splotchy. This is perfectly okay as you will grow your beard out and cover up those patches of skin over time.
So, you decided to keep growing your beard, but your chin and jaw may have become very itchy and even painful. What happens is as your beard hair grows, your skin dries out and much like your scalp, if left unattended for a period of time, can get flaky. This is where beard oil is utilized as it moisturizes the skin under your beard and helps it grow better. Once you get a little more length on it after growing for a couple months, beard butter is better used to help maintain moisture and condition your beard to make it softer and less scraggly. We don’t want to go for the caveman look (unless you are into that sort of thing). When using beard products, it helps to use these daily for the best results. Find your favorite brand and follow the directions on the label.
Beard growth is also based on your genetics. Some men can grow a full healthy beard in just a few short months while others my struggle to get past the beginning stages. Some may even just not be able to grow a beard. While there are no tried-and-true ways to make your genes change to allow your body to grow a beard, there are some things you can do to try and help the process. It all starts with good body health. Your beard can be a direct reflection of your health in total, so it is important to maintain your health. Part of that good health can be from making sure you’re getting the proper vitamins and nutrients and keeping yourself stress free. There are also products on the market today that stimulate hair growth and can speed up the process of growing your facial hair. Exercising is a great thing to do because it improves blood flow as well as massaging your face. Increased blood flow means increased growth. It is also important to exfoliate and use face scrubs to keep dead skin away. A clean face stimulates tiny hairs to start growing. Lastly, keep hydrated. This seems like a pretty simple statement but there are a lot of men out there that are not hydrating as well as they should be. This is not just for beard health but for your health in general.
Beard maintenance is an important key as well to growing a luscious beard. This means regular maintenance and trimming. Yes, you heard that right, part of growing is trimming. Trimming gets rid of fly-aways and dead ends that just don’t grow right anymore. Trimming is also how a beardsman shapes his beard into what the iconic beards look like. If you do not feel comfortable trimming your own beard, you can head down to your local barber and get a good trim and tidy up. If you do want to try it yourself, get yourself a good pair of clippers and scissors. Adding on to the maintenance, you also want a beard brush and beard comb to help with prepping your beard daily and as mentioned, beard products. You can head over to Furry Hippie Beard Company to get the products you need and as a bonus, they just smell awesome.
Now, you have the basics of understanding the beard essentials and knowledge that you can grow a full, healthy beard very easy. Just remember that growing a beard is a time-consuming process and can take a couple months before you really start to see the results you want. Continue following the series to learn more about beard care and how to care for yourself as a man. In the next post we will talk more in depth about maintaining your beard and address common problems and solutions that you can do to keep your beard as great as it can be.
